Letters: Heritage efforts recognized in awards

Dear Editor,

It was with pleasure that we attended the B.C. Heritage Society Awards banquet and gala last weekend.

It was rewarding to witness Langley Heritage supporters receiving special recognition. Harold Whittel accepted an award for the Society of Fort Langley

Residences for Sustainable Development, in recognition of Advocacy, Awareness and Planning. Ted and Lynda Lightfoot and the Langley Heritage Society accepted an award for Outstanding Achievement in Heritage Preservation.

Those awards represent a great deal of work and effort by people with integrity in an attempt to save the historic elements and atmosphere of our national and provincial treasure, the “Birthplace of British Columbia,” and to preserve the heritage areas of Langley. These places are unique, and to keep them viable, we must preserve this unique quality.

The value of heritage and history appears somewhat underrated, and unless people are made aware of the benefits to tourism, education, and of course recreation, it will be lost forever. Therefore we congratulate Heritage BC for recognizing the work of our citizens for preserving heritage buildings and ideals, and we are proud of the Langley recipients of the prestigious awards which demonstrate the values of heritage preservation.
