I was surprised to see that three quarters of Law Society of BC members who voted were against allowing the privately run Trinity Western University to open a law school [B.C. law society pulls backing for TWU, Nov. 4, Langley Advance].
Having taken a couple of classes at TWU in the past, and having associated with students and faculty, I have found that the level of tolerance for people whose views and customs differ from theirs greatly exceeds what I experience on average in society at large.
I have no doubt that the school would produce very good lawyers, as capable as any of practising objectively and without prejudice in today’s marketplace.
The outcome of the Law Society’s vote strikes me as somewhat ironic, and as evidence that none of us, even as a members of a profession, is immune from reacting with intolerance towards those we don’t understand or agree with.
