I only graduated in June, and therefore am fairly aware of the quality of education being taught today.
I attended Langley Fundamental Middle School which is a very small and crowded school, despite which, the education I received was more than sufficient, as I am now enrolled in the University of the Fraser Valley.
Having children bus 20-30 minutes to school – a necessity when it comes to the future of younger generations – is being seen as “not acceptable.†My brother and I would have to bus 15-20 minutes to school, and there were many students who commuted even longer.
I now drive almost an hour to attend university. What’s going to happen when these children have to travel longer than half an hour to get to school?
This generation has it too easy, and expects everything to be done for them. The fact that parents willingly cater to their children’s every command is not helping the situation.
In the letter written by Evelyn Forrest [Schools falling behind children’s numbers, Oct. 30 Letters, Langley Advance] there are seven schools mentioned in Willoughby alone. Imagine how many there are in the rest of Langley. With this many schools it is hard to imagine the need to build even more.
It is not that children’s education is “at the bottom of the funding list.†It is simply ridiculous to continue building more schools when there are already dozens.
