Letters: RT Russian propaganda machine

Dear Editor,

Perhaps John Beeching [Industry must catch up with public, Sept. 29 Letters, Langley Advance] is not up on current media motives, but he is being duped by thinking of and promoting RT-America as a legitimate TV news source.

RT is an acronym for Russia Today. RT-America is an English language cable news channel operated by the Kremlin in Moscow and Washington DC. It is Putin’s best propaganda outlet to instigate and justify his aggressive foreign policy.

RT is international, also distributed in Arabic and Spanish languages, and is their main method to spread bias disinformation cleverly manipulated within the news.

One American RT broadcast anchor Liz Wahl resigned her job on-air-live last March, as she could not ethically and morally stand to be used as a pawn to berate her values and her country.

NATO Secretary Anders Rasmussen in June 2014 announced that Russian intelligence was covertly funding environmental organizations in mounting a sophisticated disinformation campaign aimed at undermining attempts to exploit alternative energy (fracking/shale gas), especially in Europe. It’s also aimed at stopping North American Liquefied Natural Gas exports to Europe, to protect the Russian gas export market, which revenue is paramount to their (GDP) economy.

Putin doesn’t give a hoot about climate change. He uses environmental arguments to ban fracking to keep Europe dependent on imported Russian natural gas.

Russia itself has massive fracking projects, especially in Siberia. Global warming is just a convenient tool to use eco-saviours to spin and manipulate to Russia’s advantage.

The Russians are masters at propaganda. In their subversive terms, those of us who are naïve, uninformed or easily led are referred to as “useful idiots.” Look it up.

Be skeptical and think critically, as there are a lot of deceptive, hidden agendas out there.
