Letters: Single woman feels vulnerable in downtown Langley City

Dear Editor,

There appears to be an increase in the number homeless people, vagrants, and prostitutes in the Langley downtown core. The drug presence is palpable.

Last night, while shopping on Fraser Highway, I was asked by two vagrants for money. One asked me as I got out of my car, and he asked again when I returned to my car.

I felt quite vulnerable.

I have noticed that, almost every time I visit the store, there is someone asking for money, and it is not just one individual.

There was an old man with a white tipped cane, a grungy, drugged-out 30-something guy dressed all in black, a 20-something large-boned woman, and the one last night – 50-something tall guy with grey curly hair.

As a single woman, I don’t feel safe, and for that reason I have told the store manager that, until they resolve this issue, I will not return.

The problem, though, is that I had been seriously considering buying a condo almost across the street, and the feeling I have about that section of Langley is that it has deteriorated. I would hate to see Fraser Highway turn into the equivalent of Vancouver’s East Hastings Street.

Are the police working on this? What is being done and what can be done?
