Liberals working to ensure balanced decision making, says MP

Editor: I was disappointed to read a letter to the editor on Feb. 7 titled “B.C. seats don’t matter to Trudeau,” which suggested that MPs don’t advocate for their constituents.

To set the record straight: each one of the 18 Liberal Members of Parliament in British Columbia works hard to represent the interests of our communities and ensure that we take a balanced approach in our decision making.

Our government has been clear that the environment and the economy go hand-in-hand. We have taken concrete, meaningful action to protect and preserve our environment, including a $1.5-billion investment in a comprehensive Oceans Protection Plan, ratification of the Paris Agreement, and negotiation of the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change.

We’re in the process of overhauling and strengthening our environmental assessment process through the introduction of Bill C-69 and have committed to ensuring that projects in the national interest are approved and move forward. The Kinder Morgan expansion is one such project.

While I appreciate the contributor from Victoria writing, the feedback that I’ve heard from my constituents has been balanced and reflects an understanding that we need to grow our economy while protecting our environment.

I continue to listen to, and work hard for the constituents of Cloverdale-Langley City, and welcome their input and feedback on the decisions the federal government makes.

John Aldag,

MP for Cloverdale-Langley City
