$50,000 granted to LEC for volleyball event

The provincial government has committed $50,000 to assist with funding for the 2013 NORCECA Men’s Volleyball Continental Championship.

The provincial government has committed $50,000 to assist with funding for the 2013 NORCECA Men’s Volleyball Continental Championship, happening Sept. 23-30 at the Langley Events Centre.

This funding joins the support of the host municipality and facility, the Township of Langley and the Langley Events Centre, to provide a solid financial structure for the international championship.

The event will feature the top men’s national volleyball teams from North America, Central America and the Caribbean, including the Canadian Men’s National team.

The LEC is partnering with Volleyball B.C. and Volleyball Canada to host the event, the largest international volleyball event to come to British Columbia in more than two decades.

“With the support and partnerships in place from the Langley Events Centre, Volleyball B.C., and now from the Province of B.C., we are confident in the organizational capacity to deliver a successful event at this international level,” said Mark Eckert, Volleyball Canada executive director.

“We trust we’ll see great crowds coming from throughout B.C. and Canada to witness the highest level of volleyball in the world, and of course to cheer on our national team as they vie to become champions of our continental zone and qualify for the Grand Champions Cup later that fall.”

The championship will be the second significant volleyball event to be hosted in the Township of Langley in the past twelve months.

The 2012 U-23 Men’s Volleyball Pan Am Cup took place at the LEC last September, proving the venue’s ability to host the larger event featuring the senior men’s team.

Tickets for the event will go on sale later this spring and will feature the opportunity for fans to see some of the best athletes in the world.
