A baker's dozen for Spartans

Trinity Western men's volleyball team on 13-match winning streak

The Trinity Western Spartans head into the post-season on a 13-match winning streak.

The Spartans men's volleyball team — ranked third in the country — won 3-1 on both Friday and Saturday in Winnipeg against the Wesmen.

TWU finished the regular season in second spot (20-4) and will host the Thompson Rivers WolfPack (13-11) in a best-of-three Canada West quarter-final match at the Langley Events Centre. Game one is tonight (Thursday) and game two is Friday. If necessary, the third and deciding match would be Saturday.

The winner advances to the Canada West Final Four championships the following week in Edmonton.

Spartans coach Ben Josephson was a little surprised his team won the season finale.

TWU won 26-24 and 30-28, lost the third set 25-15 and then closed the match 30-28.

"It was greasy and I'm not sure how we won when I look at the stats," he said.

"We won three deuce sets that we basically stole and then we got blown out in the third. Statistically, it doesn't look like we won the game, but we got timely plays and we got out of there. Our opponents made it hard on us, but we found a way."

Friday's match saw TWU lose the opener 25-22 before winning 25-22, 25-19 and 25-19.
