The Six Nations Arrows have gone from in serious trouble down two games to none, to one game away from calling themselves Minto Cup champions.
The Arrows scored the only five goals of the third period to defeat the Coquitlam Adanacs 12-7 in the pivotal game five of the best-of-seven junior A lacrosse championship series on Aug.21 at the Langley Events Centre.
Game five saw the teams trading who had control.
Six Nations led 5-1 before getting into penalty trouble, which allowed Coquitlam to cut the deficit to 5-3 after 20 minutes.
The Adanacs continued that momentum and led 7-6 at one point in the second period. But the Arrows tied it prior to intermission and then did all of the scoring in the third period.
“It was where we wanted to be going into the third,” said Arrows head coach Marshall Abrams.
“Brendan Bomberry came up huge for us and we’re fortunate to come out with a win.”
Bomberry scored three of the Arrows five third period goals, while holding the Adanacs scoreless in the final frame.
“We had our chances in the third, which would’ve been huge seeing as we didn’t score any goals that period,” said Eli McLaughlin.
“We’ll regroup, get a team meal in and watch some film and cut down on our mistakes.”
“I believe in the boys, the boys believe and we just have to get ready for these elimination games,” said McLaughlin.
Game six of the series is on Saturday (Aug. 23) night with an 8 p.m. start.
If necessary, game seven would be the following night, also at 8 p.m.
