Surrendering the tying goal with one second left in regulation might be too much to overcome for some teams. But not the Langley Lightning.
The Langley Girls Ice Hockey Association peewee hockey team shook off any lingering feelings from that late goal to prevail in a shootout over the North Shore Avalanche.
The two teams were playing on Sunday at the Walnut Grove Sportplex with the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association championship banner on the line.
Emily Yeomans opened the scoring for Langley late in the second period, and after the Avalanche tied things up in the third, Kate May put the Lightning ahead once again with 60 seconds to play.
But with their goalie on the bench for an extra attacker, North Shore struck for the equalizer with one second on the clock.
Undeterred, Langley did not let any momentum the Avalanche may have generated from the late goal.
Cassidy Suidy and Halle Berwick scored for the Lightning in the shootout round, while goaltender Sherri Brake only allowed one goal to give Langley the victory.
The championship banner caps off a stellar season for the Lightning as they also won gold at the Abbotsford Icebreaker tournament in December and silver at the Spring Breakaway Hockey Tournament in Kelowna earlier this month.
The Lightning consist of Kate Dolinski, Brooke Saunders, Chloe Jahn, Shaylyn Campbell, Keira Brawdy, Melissa Cartwright, Kate May, Emily Yeomans, Cassidy Suidy, Abbey Thomasson, Halle Berwick, Jessica Douglas, Sherri Brake and Taliash Bartos.
