After a tight first quarter which saw them lead by just three points, the Brookswood Bobcats took control with a strong middle two periods to win their opening round match.

The Bobcats defeated the Claremont Spartans 72-51 on Wednesday afternoon on the first day of the B.C. AAA senior girls basketball championships at the Langley Events Centre.

Jessie Brown led the way for the ’Cats with 24 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Tayla Jackson also came through with 18 points, seven rebounds, four assists and a blocked shot. She did so despite battling a stomach flu all game.

Claremont was led by Haley Cabral's 17 points.

Brookswood led 17-14 after one and 35-24 at the half. They extended the lead to 52-33 after three quarters.

The win advances the Bobcats to the quarter-finals, where they will face the Argyle Pipers. That game is on March 7 at 7 p.m.

The other quarter-final games pit the Handsworth Royals against the Maple Ridge Ramblers, the Kelowna Owls and the Oak Bay Breakers, and the South Kamloops Titans and the Riverside Rapids.
