Jordan Schmidt is running from Langley to Burnaby.

Not literally, of course, just figuratively. And he’s not running away from Langley, but more like running to the next destination in his ascent of his running career.

The Grade 12 student at R.E. Mountain Secondary has signed on to join the SFU Clan track and field and cross-country teams for next season.

Schmidt is an 800m specialist and two-time provincial champion, winning the provincial junior boys title in 2016 and the youth title the following year. He was also part of the Mountain team which won the BC provincial cross-country championship back in November.

And with a personal best of 1:54.01 in the 800, he is considered one of the top prospects in the province for his age group.

“Jordan has a great deal of raw talent and the passion to be one of our best middle distance athletes,” said SFU coach Brit Townsend.

“He is a fluid runner and is looking forward to building his strength and endurance to reach the next level. He will follow a great tradition of middle distance runners at SFU and I am confident he will emerge as one of the best ever.

“I felt like SFU gives me the best chance to have success academically and athletically,” said Schmidt, who is planning to pursue a degree in business.

“Under Brit’s leadership and guidance, I am sure that I will be able to reach my full potential as both a student as well as an athlete.”
