Chantelle Fawcett is the classic example that you can’t judge a book by its cover.
Slight on the ice, her looks can be deceiving.
“When you meet her and talk to her, she is very quiet and mild mannered,” said Richard White, the head coach for Team B.C.’s ringette squad.
“You would expect someone who plays with finesse and not so much aggression.
“But on the ice, she is one of the most aggressive players I know.”
“When it comes to getting the ring away from other players, she tracks everybody down with her speed and strength,” he raved.
“She will win the battle 90 per cent of the time.”
Fawcett was a little bit surprised to make the final roster, just because of the sheer volume of players who tried out and the fact that at age 16, she is one of the younger members of Team B.C.
While slight on the ice — she is five-foot-four and weighs 125 pounds — Fawcett has speed to burn.
And that speed, combined with her tenacity, are what endeared her to the coaching staff when making the final roster.
“They like my speed and how I get in on the forecheck,” she said about what the coaches told her when she was named to the team.
“She is a very fast player and a very smart player,” White said.
As for being one of the youngest players on the squad, that is nothing new for Fawcett: she plays on a Lower Mainland U19 AA squad.
Fawcett represented the Fraser Valley at the 2008 B.C. Winter Games in Kimberley-Cranbrook, helping her team win the silver medal.
