Former Spartans great lands head coaching gig

Adam Friesen, the all-time leading scorer for the Trinity Western basketball program, to coach Fraser Valley Cascades

Former Trinity Western Spartans standout Adam Friesen will be named the new head coach of the Fraser Valley Cascades men's basketball program this week.

The 29-year-old Friesen takes over for Barnaby Craddock, whose contract with UFV expired this month. Craddock chose to accept the head coaching job at the University of Alberta. Friesen was an assistant under Craddock for all five of the former coach's seasons in Abbotsford.

"It was a shock to the program. Everyone was disappointed," Friesen said about Craddock's departure.

Friesen played from 2002 to 2005 with Trinity Western and still holds school records for career points, with 1,869 in 99 games and assists, with 443. He also holds the Spartans single season record for both categories, with 783 points and 183 assists, which he racked up during his first season.

Friesen will be on a one-year contract.

The Cascades are coming their best season ever, a fourth-place finish at the national championships. They return all five starters and also boast a strong recruiting class.
