Four goals in a pair of games — both victories — have earned Trinity Western Spartans’ Dirk De Waal the BCIHL player of the week award.

De Waal scored twice in both the Spartans’ 6-3 win over the UVic Vikes and 5-1 victory against the Vancouver Island Mariners on Friday and Saturday as TWU opened the hockey season with a pair of road games.

Trailing 3-1 heading into the third period against the Vikes, De Waal scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals.

He added two more goals and an assist in Saturday’s 5-1 win.

Florian Niedermaier also scored twice in the first game with Evan Last and Jordan Rendle tallying the other TWU markers.

The second game saw Niedermaier, Last and Kade Vilio also find the back of the net.

Silas Matthys was in net for both victories, making 16 saves in the opener and another 22 in game two.

“What I really like through the first two games of the season is that our fourth line is really giving us lots of energy, forcing turnovers and capitalizing,” said Spartans coach Barret Kropf.

“It was a solid effort all around and we gave ourselves a chance to win on the road.”

The Spartans host the Mariners on Friday night at the Langley Events Centre.
