Gators win OT thriller

Derek Muxworthy scores two of his 25 points in the late stages of his team's 90-77 comeback victory on Friday at the Langley Events Centre.

Derek Muxworthy banked in a three-point shot as time expired to force overtime and then the Walnut Grove Gators took over.

The Gators out-scored the Oak Bay Bays in the extra period to win 90-77 on the consolation side of the draw for the B.C. high school senior boys' AAA basketball championships at the Langley Events Centre.

The win means Walnut Grove will play for sixth and eight place against the Sir Charles Tupper Tigers on Saturday (March 19). The game is at

Muxworthy, who was named player of the game, finished with 25 points, including four three-pointers. He also had eight assists and five rebounds.

That nearly matched starting point guard Jack Tsai, who had 27 points and six three-pointers.

De'Sean Monsanto had 15 points.

The Gators show an impressive 46 per cent from both the field and three-point line.

Oak Bay was led by Drake Downer's 31 points.

In the first quarter, it looked like the game was going to be a rout as the Gators led 29-13 after one quarter, but Oak Bay made a game of it thanks to a dominant second period where they held Walnut Grove to six points to trail by just a bucket, 35-33.

And by the time the third quarter ended, Oak Bay led 51-47.

The Bays, the second-place team from Vancouver Island, led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter, before the Gators went on a 13-3 run to tie the score at 70. The points came off a trio of threes from Tsai and then another pair from Muxworthy, including the buzzer beater.
