Kim swims to five gold medals, one silver

Langley Olympians finish fifth at prestigious B.C. AAA long-course championships

Up against 42 other swim clubs from across the province, the Langley Olympians delivered a fifth-place finish.

The Olympians were competing at the 2013 B.C. AAA long-course (50m pool) championships last week (July 4 to July 7).

The local club sent a team of 28 swimmers — who all had to achieve qualifying times to attend the meet — and they were up against more than 700 swimmers.

Josh Kim had an outstanding meet as the 11-year-old broke two meet records on his way to winning gold in five events and silver in another.

Kim set new standards in the 50 free (29.82) and 100 breast (1:19.69). He won gold in five events (200 free, 200 breast, 50 free, 400IM and 100 breast) and silver in the 100 fly.

Renae Ledoux had a fantastic meet as the 13-year-old broke two meet records — in the 100m breast (1:14.55) and 200m breast (2:41.05). She won gold in both events as well as silver in the 200IM and 100 free and bronze in the 400IM.

And Hillary Metcalfe, 15, was another meet record breaker, as well as multiple medal winner. Metcalfe won a pair of gold in the 100 breast and 200 breast, setting new records with times of 1:14.68 and 2:39.17, as well as silver in the 200IM and bronze in the 400IM.

The Olympians had four other swimmers reach the podium, as well.

Justin Schramm, 15, won silver in the 200 fly, 200 free and 100 fly and bronze in the 400 free.

Robyn Nakano, 14, won silver in the 100 fly.

Josie Field, 11, won silver in the 200 fly.

And Brayden Kells, 11, won bronze in the 100 free and 100 breast.

The Olympians relay teams were also successful in capturing medals and new club records.

The 12 & under girls 4x200 free team, Lisa Grier, Ellen Lansing, Mackenzie Dong and Jenessa Hillman won silver, setting a new Club Record in a time of 9:39.88; the 14 and under 4x100 free team, Hannah Weinkauf, Robyn Nakano, Renae Ledoux and Chelsea Borrowdale set a new Club Record 4:16.61; The 12 and under girls 4x100 medley team Ellen Lansing, Mackenzie Dong, Lisa Grier and Jenessa Hillman, won bronze; the 14 and under 4x100 medley team Alysse Franklin, Chelsea Borrowdale, Robyn Nakano and Renae Ledoux, won bronze; the 12 and under boys 4x100 medley team Hugh McNeill, Brayden Kells, Joshua Kim and Avery Martin set a new Club Record 5:23.74; the 12 and under 4x100 free team Joshua Kim, Brayden Kells, Hugh McNeill and Avery Martin set a new Club Record, 4:40.21 and won bronze; the 12 and under boys 4x200 free team Joshua Kim, Hugh McNeill, Brayden Kells and Avery Martin set a new club Record 10:08.90 and came away with a bronze medal.

Siobhan Board, Chelsea Borrowdale, Alysse Franklin, Bailey Herbert, Jenessa Hillman, Ellen Lansing, Bennett MacDonald, Kelley MacDonald, Avery Martin, Martha Metcalfe and Gabby Szalkai all made finals in their events while Josie Field, Bailey Herbert, Joshua Kim and Renae Ledoux swam 100 per cent personal bests in their events.
