Their three-peat bid may have been denied, but the Credo Christian Kodiaks still captured a medal for the fourth straight season at the provincial championships.

“(We’re) slightly disappointed, but the boys did play well,” said coach Stan de Haan.”

The Kodiaks dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to the Kelowna Christian Knights in the Single A B.C. senior boys provincial championship game on Saturday.

The tournament was held at the UBC Okanagan campus in Kelowna.

Credo Christian won the first set 25-23 and was up 2-1 after a 25-21 victory in set three. But Kelowna Christian stayed alive with a 25-20 victory and then took the decisive fifth set 15-8.

The Knights and Kodiaks were the top two seeds, respectively, heading into the championships.

This was the third time the two schools played each other this season and while the Knights won all three times, the most recent game was the closest Credo Christian came to knocking them off.

De Haan added that it was hard to pinpoint the difference in the final between the two teams.

“We played well, we just couldn’t quite pull through,” he said.

While the team was disappointed in being denied their quest for a third straight title — the school won in both 2010 and 2011 as well as finishing second in 2009 — de Haan said they handled the loss well.

In the team’s other games, they defeated Bulkley Valley and Sparwood in pool play, and then beat Vernon Christian and Bulkley Valley in the playoff round.

Ben Togeretz and Josh Van Delft were named first team all-stars, while Zachary Vanderploeg was a second team selection. And Connor Pruim was an honourable mention.
