Five athletes from the Langley-based Fraser Valley Fusion 2010 team have been selected by Softball Canada for the U15 women's national team that will represent Canada at the upcoming Pan American Championships in Acapulco Mexico.
Rachel Clegg, Saesha Kent, Jordyn Mackenzie, Robyn McIsaac and Leah Rayson will be attending the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) Americas II Pan American U15 Women's Championships, aiming to qualify for the Women's Softball World Cup in Italy later this year.
Kaitlyn Cameron, head of the Fusion program, described the reaction to the announcement as excited and proud, "knowing how hard those kids have worked, from when they started in our association to kinda get to this point to be chosen for that team."
It's the first time Canada has sent a U15 team, Cameron noted.
"What our program's trying to do is develop players that can play at a higher level," Cameron commented.
"For the last five years, we've really been focusing on our player development, and having more of that community-based development approach. So, for us to get some of our younger players, who've been in the system for five years, to make this team, it just proves that our development program is working and that we can continue on that path."
The roster, of 16 athletes and two alternates, are from four provinces, with 10 representatives, from B.C. with the biggest contingent, five, from the Fusion.
Ontario is sending four athletes, while Alberta and Saskatchewan each contribute two players
“This is an exciting time for our program,” said Kaleigh Rafter, head coach of the women’s national team.
“These athletes have demonstrated exceptional skill, dedication, and passion for the sport. We are proud to have them represent Canada on the international stage and look forward to seeing them thrive in Acapulco.”
Pan American U15 Women’s Championship are scheduled to take place in Acapulco from March 20–29.
