Langley Blaze burn Eagles to open ball season

The Langley Blaze used a pair of big innings to sweep a season-opening doubleheader.

The U18 Premier Baseball League team was in Victoria, grounding the Eagles 9-3 and 14-9 on Sunday at Lambrick Park.

The opener required extra innings with Langley scoring seven times in the top of the ninth inning to snap a 2-2 tie. TheEagles would get one run back in their half of the inning, but that would be all they could muster.

The offence was led by three RBIs apiece from Daniel Martin and Marshall Luiz and a two-run home run off the bat of MichaelO’Toole. O’Toole also scored three runs.

Kyle Prather earned the win with a solid eight innings on the mound, scattering six hits and two runs.

In the second game, the Blaze scored runs in each of the final five innings, including seven in the sixth and four in the seventhfor the 14-9 win.

Dawson Gray went yard with a solo home run while Danny Berg, Martin and O’Toole each had a pair of RBIs.

Gus Wilson, Mac Berry and Luiz also drove in a run apiece as eight of the nine Blaze batters had at least an RBI.

Colby Ring struck out six to earn the win.

Langley will look for a 3-0 start as they face the Cardinals in Abbotsford on April 4.

The Blaze are set for their McLeod Park debut on April 7 when they host the Whalley Chiefs. Game time is 6 p.m.
