VIDEO: Langley cheer team wins silver at world championships

Winning routine was based on ‘Mean Girls’ movie

A cheerleading routine inspired by the movie ‘Mean Girls’ turned out to be a silver-medal-worthy performance by the 20-member Allure team from Langley at the weekend Summit world championships in Florida.

Langley Cheer & Athletics Gym owner Leanna Fisher was “ecstatic.”

“Second in the world is a pretty huge thing,” Fisher said.

By Sunday, May 5, Allure knew they were in the top five, but they didn’t know how where they had placed.

“They call the names out in [reverse] order, and when they got to number three without naming us, we knew,” Fisher recalled.

When the silver win was announced, there were delighted yells and tears of joy, Fisher said.

She said the “Mean Girls” theme was chosen by the team members, who worked hard to perfect a two-and-a-half minute presentation that mixed athletics with attitude, then performed it without making a single mistake.

“They love the movie,” Fisher said.

It was only the third year the club has qualified to complete in the Summit International world championships, this time sending three teams, the senior level 4 Allure, junior level 1 Radiance and junior level 3 Jade.

Allure and Radiance went as a “paid bids” where Summit organizers cover registration and accommodation costs, while Jade was admitted as a “wild card” and had to pay their own way.

Radiance and Jade also did well, finishing in the “top 50 per cent” of their divisions, Fisher said.

“Our athletes train very hard, they’re very committed and they have the support of their families,” Fisher said.

Two Allure members were about to “age out” of their division by turning 19, so the win was well-timed, Fisher said.

“To go out with a silver is awesome,” Fisher said.

“I’m ecstatic.”

At the Summit level, competitive cheerleading features jumps, dance, stunts and tumbling that require flexibility, endurance, strength and coordination.

Like gymnasts, cheer athletes are awarded points for difficulty, technique, creativity and sharpness.
