The Langley peewe C6 Ice Hawks skated to gold at the Sunshine Coast Winter Classic this past weekend in Sechelt.

With 16 peewee hockey teams playing, including two other ‘C’ squads, the boys had an uphill battle from the start, noted their head coach Michael Hendricks

The Eagles opened with a 2-1 win over Port Moody C3 on Friday night, and followed that with a 4-2 win over Cloverdale C4 and a 7-1 victory over the host Sunshine Coast C1 team on Saturday.

Those wins put the Ice Hawks first in their eight team pool and faced Cloverdale C6, who topped their eight team pool, in the finals on Sunday afternoon.

The Langley boys came out strong and had an early 2-0 lead, only to see Cloverdale rally to take a 3-2 lead by the middle of the second period.

The team regrouped, and led by game MVP David Hendricks, scored the tying and winning goals in an 18 second span late in the second period.

The Eagles kept the pressure on into the third period and sealed the tourney title with a 6-3 victory.

Coaches Hendricks and Mike Newby said they were very proud of the team effort all weekend.

“We loved how every line contributed to the big win in the finals,” added Hendricks, who thanked Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey for “hosting a great tournament.”
