The Langley bantam 97 Rebels rallied to capture top spot at a softball tournament in Abbotsford.

The Langley Rebels needed a tiebreaker to qualify for the playoff round and used that second chance to their advantage.

The 97 rebels bantam rep B fastpitch softball team was at a tournament in Abbotsford over the weekend (April 28-29), where they rallied to capture the gold medal, defeating a pair of teams who had already beaten them in earlier play.

The team was 2-2 through the round robin but was able to move on thanks to a greater differential in runs scored and total bases compared.

In the semifinal game, they faced the 1996 Delta Sunfire, a team which has beaten the Rebels quite soundly the day before.

But the players responded to their coaches' challenge to come out swinging, and they did just that, continuously making contact with the ball and driving in run after run, eventually ending the game in the mercy rule.

The championship final was a rematch with the 1997 Abbotsford Outlaws, but the Rebels bats continued to stay alive, while pitcher Brooke Deakin tossed a solid game, cementing a 12-2 victory for the gold medal.
