The Langley Skating Club Ice Show is Saturday, Dec. 17.

But don’t check the calendar.

“This years ice show is a departure from our ordinary biennial year-end shows, which we historically hold in March,” explained coach Rob Woodley.

He’s seen other clubs do holiday ice shows.

“It looked very fun and everyone was in the spirit! So this year we thought we’d tackle a Christmas show with the Langley Skating Club for the very first time,” Woodley said.

During shows at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., approximately 125 skaters – ranging from three years of age to 20 – will take to the ice of the George Preston Recreation Centre.

The show is built on the premise of Christmas TV, including western shoutouts to classic holiday movies, TV specials to musicals.

Combine that with guest skaters Haley Sales and Nikolas Wamsteeker. This is the audience’s chance to see top-level talent with sights set on the Olympics, he said.

“Nik was a member of our club for many years and we are very happy for and proud of Nikolas and Haley for all their accomplishments,” Woodley added.

“They are an extremely talented dance team that has a very bright future ahead of them. Their goal is to qualify for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games and after you see them skate you’ll see why this is very possible.”

It was back in the summer when the organizers’ thoughts turned to snowflakes, elves, Grinches and other motifs of the Christmas season.

“There are around 18 different routines and a lot of them have feature skaters, which come with many costumes,” he noted. “Sherri Millar, our costume coordinator and Faye [Morrell, the show coordinator] were able to track down a lot of costumes both in person and online and the skaters look great! When the skaters get out on the ice with all the lighting we brought in and their costumes on, it will be a very special memory.”

Recent renovations at the Brookswood rec centre means more seats are available. Advance tickets can be purchased by emailing registrar@skatelangley.com and at the door (if there are any available). Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for those 12 and younger. Learn more at skatelangley.com.
