Langley Stampeders heading to provincials

Last year’s BC Community Football Association Midget champions, the Langley Minor Football Stampeders, earned the right to defend their title with a semi-final win at MAP on Nov. 20.

Langley faced the Victoria Spartans at McLeod Athletic Park  in the BCCLF Midget provincial semi’s.

First quarter action saw the two teams seesaw back and forth with neither defence giving way. Stampeders did put together a seven play march from their 11 yard marker, but were forced to kick the ball away by the Spartans.

Langley scored on their first possession of the second moving from the Victoria 46 to paydirt with quarterback Devante Wilson scoring.

Victoria put together a return march from their 46-yard line but were shut out on a wide 23-yard field goal attempt.

Two series later, the Stampeders recovered a Spartan fumble on the 19 turning it into a touchdown by Sheldon Gangloff. The teams went to the dressing rooms with the home team leading 14-0.

The third quarter again started as a defensive battle. It was broken open when Azuka Okoli rushed from the Stamps 44 to the Victoria 5 setting up the Langley third touchdown by Wes Foss. The third ended 21-0.

The final quarter saw Stampeders defence come up big. They sacked the Victoria quarterback on successive plays causing a turnover on downs at the Victoria 27. Nathan Murray completed the Stamps scoring with a 27-yard touchdown.

Final score Stampeders 28, Spartans 0.

The Stampeders are going to the BCCFA Midget championship game for the fourth year in a row. This year’s opponents will be the North Langley Kodiaks who defeated North Surrey Bears 17-7 at Bear Creek Park.

All the BCCFA 12-player football final provincial championship games will be played at McLeod on Dec. 4, 2016.
