Langley United hangs in for a win

Old-fashioned stick-to-itiveness has lifted the Langley United premier men’s soccer team to the next rung of the Provincial A Cup ladder.

United came from behind three times to beat the PMO Lordco Gunners by a 4-3 count Saturday at Port Moody Town Centre Stadium.

The win, accomplished in extra time, advances Langley to the quarter-final of the Provincial A Cup, to face Surrey United.

United and the Gunners know each other well.

The two teams played in the Pakenham Cup final, where Langley earned a 5-2 overtime win.

Goals were plentiful in the rematch.

PMO opened the scoring, capitalizing on a Langley miscue in the penalty area 10 minutes into the match.

United replied at the 25-minute mark off a free kick from Brayden Volkenant to Tyson Keam, who snuck in behind the Gunners’ back-line to receive the 40-yard pass. Keam then quickly directed the ball to Andre Costa for his first of three goals on the day.

However, at the 60-minute mark, PMO regained the lead off a corner kick.

But United just wouldn’t go away and at 85 minutes, Costa netted his second goal into the top corner, off a nice set play from eight yards out.

Tied 2-2, the teams went into extra time. At 95 minutes, the Gunners struck again, scoring in first half of overtime on the run of the play.

That goal looked to be the game winner until the 112th minute when, with time running out, Langley got the equalizer on Costa’s hat trick marker.

The eventual game winner came at the 121st minute off an excellently served Mitchell Rohla corner kick ball that found its way onto Lee Ellis’s head to seal Langley’s win.

“We have played Port Moody six times this season and our last three games in a row against them have all been very close,” United coach Rob Keam said.

Keam said the credit goes to the players and team “that showed up today for us.”

According to coach Keam, notable performances during the game included goalkeeper Colton Keam, who made several key saves late in the match; the back-line of Brayden Volkenant, Paul Ballard, Liam Mcallister, Zak Yeomans, Lee Ellis, and Chris Trauter, who were solid and played very well; and midfielders Devin Gilroy, Mike Perry, Mitchell Rohla, Carlos Del Aguilam and Tyson Keam, who all ran miles and made it difficult for the Port Moody attack to get going.

“[Our] midfield was a threat going forward all day with excellent service into the goal area,” Keam said.

Colin Jones made, Keam said, “countless runs, and second efforts at each end of the field.”

Game MVP forward Andre Costa was credited by his coach “for his neat and tidy Brazilian footwork and timely finishing of all three goals.”
