Langley Xtreme sizzles in Kelowna

The Xtreme captured yet another first place medal on May 29 to 31, this time at the 2015 Kelowna Spring Sizzle U14 Fastpitch Tournament.

The Xtreme captured another first place medal, this time at the 2015 Kelowna Spring Sizzle U14 Fastpitch Tournament held May 29 to 31.

Not counting its fourth straight gold medal win at a tournament last weekend, the Langley squad was undefeated in three tourneys with an impressive 18-0 record.

After a long drive up the Coquihalla highway the day before, the team played its first game of the tournament, rolling to a 13-5 win over the Poco Ravens 02 Saturday morning, May 30.

Taryn Jenkins had two extra-base hits for the Xtreme as she tripled in the first inning and homered in the sixth.

Rebecca Courneyea went one-for-two and score three runs while Jayna Hagen had a hit with three RBIs.

Piper French got it done in the circle on her way to a win, allowing three runs over three innings, striking out one, with no walks. She only surrendered only three hits.

In their second game of the tourney, the Xtreme shook the South Surrey/White Rock Thunder 01 by a 12-2 score.

Langley jumped out to a 6-2 lead after three innings and never looked back.  Pitcher Ashley Preston notched the win, only allowing two runs over three innings while only giving up two hits and striking out one.

Jordan Quechuck went one-for-three with an RBI to help the cause.

Kaitlyn Cowie sent a ball rocketing over the head of the right fielder only to be tagged out at home trying for a home run.  Cowie injured her ankle on the play sliding into home and had to be treated at the hospital for a sprained ankle, only to return three hours later to cheer on her team for the rest of the weekend.

Then, with a bit of rest between games, the Xtreme came out firing and jumped out to a 7-0 lead after two innings over the Prince George Thunderbirds.

Kayla Michael held Prince George hitless over two innings, allowing no earned runs, walking one and striking out two.

French led the scoring with three hits including a double and three RBIs to pace the Xtreme to an easy 12-1 win.

Sierra Miller also chipped in with a hit and an RBI.

On Sunday morning, the Xtreme was back at it early to meet their Langley counterparts, the Xtreme 01/02 team.

Sam Cox and Jackie Hudson led the way with a hit each and an RBI each as the Xtreme came away with an 8-2 victory.

Preston pitched another strong game with a strong defence behind her and the older Xtreme team came away with a win.

Allowing 10 runs in their first four games, the Xtreme was on to the semifinals and only two wins away from another tournament win.

The team took the first step towards another tournament gold medal by beating the Coquitlam Classics in the semifinal.

Nadia Hudson had a hit and an RBI while French and Preston combined for a three-hit win as the Xtreme punched their ticket to the title game, where they met the Maple Ridge Rage 01 in the final for the second straight tourney.

The Rage had only played one game earlier in the day to reach the finals whereas the finals was the third game for the Xtreme in the hot Kelowna sun.

Xtreme coaches Rob French and Bill Cox asked the girls to dig deep and show what they could do to beat their cross-river rivals for the second time in the finals of a tournament.

The Xtreme responded and jumped out to a 6-2 lead after six innings, but the long day started to get to the Langley players.

The Rage battled back in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game at 7-7 and force extra innings.

Playing with international tie-breaking rules and a runner starting on second base, coach French decided to play “small ball” to see if the Ridge defence could hold up.

Hagen led off and successfully bunted the runner to third.  After five consecutive bunts and errors by the Rage defence, the Xtreme built a 12-7 lead.

The Rage couldn’t answer in the bottom of the inning and the Xtreme went on to win 12-7 and secure their third gold medal of the 2015 tournament season.
