Some late-game heroics helped the Langley midget LY9 Eagles capture the tournament title in New Westminster last week.

Josh Green scored a hat trick while Ryan Barthelson added two more — including the winning goal with 81 seconds to play — as the Langley Eagles soared to the gold medal.

The midget LY9 team was competing at a tournament in New Westminster last week (Dec. 27 to 30) with the team going 5-1.

Barthelson’s second goal snapped a 5-5 tie and gave Langley the 6-5 victory over Surrey C6 in the championship final.

Colton McDonald had the other Eagles goal while Thomas Hay stopped 27 shots for the victory. Liam Hadley earned the game’s most valuable player award.

In the team’s other games, Langley went 3-1 in round robin play to finish second. They doubled PoCo C5 6-3 in the opener, defeated North Delta C2 6-2 in game two and then won 5-3 over Surrey C6. The team lost their final preliminary game 4-3 to New Westminster C3.

They did bounce back in the semifinals, however, doubling up Surrey C4 6-3.

The team is made up of Thomas Way, Brett Anderson, Cadeyrn Barthelson, Ryan Barthelson, Cameron Brett, Matthew Garbutt, Jaden Goertzen, Zackary Gold, Nick Grant, Josh Green, Liam Hadley, Colton McDonald, Kevin Wade and Alexander Yettaw.

The coaches are Kevin Green, Dwayne Grant and Bruce Goertzen. Team manager is Amanda Barthelson.
