Lightning playing for fifth

Langley Christian bounced back from a quarter-final defeat to fan the Flames, downing the Unity Christian Flames 65-51 on Friday afternoon.

The victory means the senior boys' basketball team will play for fifth place on Saturday afternoon (March 12, 3:30 p.m.) against the St. Ann's Academy Crusaders at the Single A high school basketball championships being played at the Langley Events Centre.

Jason Wright scored 18 points to lead the Lightning.

The Lightning turned a close game — they led by four points heading into the final quarter — into a 14-point victory. Matt Rook earned player of the game honours.

Langley Christian's dreams of a provincial championship came crashing down in the quarter-finals asthe third-seed Lightning lost 72-54 to the Immaculata Mustangs on Thursday.

Rook led Langley Christian with 18 points in the defeat.

The Lightning only trailed 18-13 after the first quarter against the sixth seed Mustangs, but fell behind by 20 by halftime, 46-26 in quarter-final action at the B.C. Single A high school boys' basketball championships.

The second half was much closer, but Langley Christian was unable to cut into the lead, losing by 18.

Wright was the Lightning's player of the game.

The team's next game is Friday (March 11) against No. 10 Unity Christian. The game is at 1:15 p.m.

The best the team can finish is fifth.

In the team's opening round game, Adrian Dysktra scored 21 points as the  Lightning routed Fort Nelson 95-56 on Wednesday.

The teams were playing in the round of 16 on Wednesday afternoon at the Langley Events Centre.

Fort Nelson was led by Gabriel Irwin, who scored 38 of his team's 56 points.

The tournament runs through Saturday, with the gold medal game scheduled for 7 p.m.
