Meet the new Western Canadian softball champs

Langley Xtreme 05 U19B won every game they played to take gold at the 2024 Western Canadian Championship in Irma, Alberta.

They were undefeated in round-robin play, winning all six games, and on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 11, downed the Vancouver Wildcats 6-5 to become the 2024 Western Canadian champions.

Three Xtreme players also won individual events at the skills competition on Saturday, with Shanti Chernos winning best hitter, Jacklyn Dempsey crowned most accurate thrower and Coral Ford most accurate pitcher.

Head coach Keith Nugent was full of praise.

“I have never seen a more motivated team that worked so hard to achieve a common goal," Nugent told the Langley Advance Times.

"I could not be more proud of this group of young ladies. The players did a great job representing their community and the province. We laughed, we cried, we worked hard, built friendships, and made lifelong memories”

From August 8 to August 11, members of the Langley Xtreme 05 U19B (Xtreme 05) softball team competed against seven of the top U19B teams from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia in Irma, Alberta.

Xtreme 05 is a rep youth softball team based out of Langley that includes players and coaches from Langley, Abbotsford, Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, and Surrey.
