New award honours BCHL referees

One of the awards named after Langley's Brad Lazarowich

A new BCHL award has been named after Langley’s Brad Lazarowich.

The junior A hockey league announced it will recognize referees and linesmen for their contributions to the game.

And they decided to name the award after referee Kelly Sutherland and linesman Lazarowich, who have both spent years in the NHL.

Lazarowich has been in the league since 1986 while Sutherland has been officiating NHL games since 2000.

Both also began their officiating careers in the BCHL and Lazarowich lives in Walnut Grove.

“The awards were created to bring some recognition to our on-ice officials in the BCHL who strive to be the best they can be both on and off the ice,” said Derek Adams, the BCHL’s director of officiating.

“Kelly and Brad got their start in the BCHL and have gone on to set a very high standard for officials both on and off the ice, but also in giving back to the development of officiating in British Columbia.”

The Kelly Sutherland Award and the Brad Lazarowich Award winner will each receive $250 with another $250 donated to the charity of their choice, in their name.
