Nicmans, Gulka set to compete for Canada this summer

Two Langley youths have been selected for a pair of rowing competitions

Two years ago, David Nicmans gave up basketball in favour of rowing. And that decision has paid off with a spot on the Canadian national junior rowing team this summer.

The 18-year-old was in Welland, Ont. earlier this month for Rowing Canada Aviron selection camp and after a grueling three days, Nicmans made the final cut.

He will leave for Ontario at the end of the month — once his high school exams are completed — and spend all of July training in Peterborough.

They will then leave for Trakai, Lithuania on July 29 with the competition set to run Aug. 7 to 11.

Nicmans is part of the Burnaby Rowing Club.

And another local rower, Alexander Gulka of the Fort Langley Youth Rowing, has been selected to represent Rowing Canada Aviron at the 2013 Can Am Mex event. Gulka will compete as part of the men's sculling team at the event, which runs July 8 to July 13 in Oklahoma City.
