Olympians shine at annual meet

Langley's Joshua Kim and Josie Field each deliver eight medals at short course swim meet

Local swimmers dominated the water as the Langley Olympians Swim Club hosted their sixth annual short course meet at the Walnut Grove Aquatic Centre.

The meet saw more than 350 swimmers from around the Lower Mainland hit the water for the two-day event.

Leading the way for the Olympians was 10-year-old Joshua Kim who won gold in all eight of his events — 100 breast, 100 free, 50 back, 200 free, 100 back, 100 fly, 50 free and 200 IM — and setting new club records in six of those. Kim also set personal bests in all eight.

And while Kim dominated among the boys for his age group, another 10-year-old, Josie Field, was tops among girls thanks to six gold medals — 50 fly, 100 free, 50 back, 200 free, 100 back, 100 fly — and a pair of silver medals (50 free and 200 IM). She also had personal bests in all eight events.

Other swimmers finding the podium were:

Gold – Siobhan Board (15) in the 15 & over girls 100 back, 200 back; Hillary Metcalfe (14) in the 13-14 girls 200IM, 200 breast, 100 breast; Martha Metcalfe (16) in the 15 & over girls 400 free, 200IM, 100 fly, 400IM; Justin Schramm (14) in the 13-14 boys 400 free, 200IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 200 fly, 200 back. Justin additionally set 2 new Club Records in the 400 free 4:11.38 and 200 breast 2:35.80.

Silver – Siobhan Board in the 400 free, 200 IM and 400IM; Lisa Grier (12) in the 11-12 girls 400IM; Michael MacDonald (17) in the 15 & over boys 400 free and 200 free; Hillary Metcalfe in the 400 free and 400IM; Martha Metcalfe in the 200 breast and 200 back; Robyn Nakano (13) in the 13-14 girls 200 back; Justin Schramm in the 400IM.

Bronze – Lisa Grier in the 400 free; Bailey Herbert (10) in the 10 & under girls 100 breast and 50 fly; Joshua Franklin (16) in the 15 & over boys 50 free and 200 free; Renae Ledoux (13) in the 13-14 girls 100 breast; Michael MacDonald in the 200 back; Hugh McNeill (9) in the 10 & under boys 100 back; Martha Metcalfe in the 200 fly; Robyn Nakano (13) in the 100 fly.

LOSC swimmers who made finals placing in the top 8 were;

Chelsea Borrowdale (13), Bryce Dong (10),  Kennedy Douglas (13), Karl Hallquist (16), Alysse Franklin (13), Brayden Kells (11), Ellen Lansing (11), Avery Martin (11), Ryan Moloney (17), Pearl Schramm (11), Quinn St. Pierre (9).

A number of LOSC achieved 100% best times over the weekend, Sierra Cook (11), Bryce Dong (10), Josie Field (10), Brayden Kells (11), Joshua Kim (10), Mary Langhorst (12), Bennett MacDonald (13), Avery Martin (11), Erin Moloney (13), Joseph Park (14), Pearl Schramm (11), Sara Selje (15), April St. Pierre (12), Quinn St. Pierre (9).

“It’s great to see so many club records being broken and the majority of our swimmers making finals and going on to place in the top three," said head coach Brian Metcalfe.

“All the kids raced well and with many parents helping time and officiate, the meet was overall a huge success.”
