Olympians swim to success at Mel Zajac Jr. Meet

Meet held over the weekend at UBC featured 600 top athletes from Canada and the US

The Langley Olympians Swim Club took nine swimmers to the Mel Zajac Jr. International Swim Meet, held at the UBC Aquatic Centre Friday, June 1 to Sunday, June 3.

This high level international meet welcomed almost 600 swimmers from clubs based across Canada and the United States, including Olympic swimmers Penny Oleksiak, Caeleb Dressel and Ryan Lochte.

The Olympians swimmers all had great swims, breaking several club records and placing in multiple events.

Bailey Herbert,15, placed in three events and broke four club records over the weekend. She placed second and broke the club record in the women’s 100m breaststroke with a best time of 1:09.19. She placed second and broke the club record in the women’s 200m butterfly with a best time of 2:14.93 and placed second in the women’s 200m breaststroke with a best time of 2:29.95.

Bailey placed fourth and broke the club record in the women’s 200m IM, with a best time of 2:16.66 and also placed fourth and broke the club record in the women’s 400m IM, with a best of 4:50.97.

Bailey also swims as part of the Junior National training camp team. The Junior National training camp team had swimmers competing from across Canada.

Hillary Metcalfe, 20, placed fourth in the women’s 50m breaststroke with a time of 32.35, fifth in the women’s 200m IM with a best time of 2:17.90, seventh in the women’s 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:11.42 as well as seventh in the women’s 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:35.89.

Hillary also swam best times in the women’s 100m freestyle with a time of 58.59, the women’s 200m backstroke with a time of 2:24.09, and the women’s 100m backstroke with a time of 1:07.60.

Josie Field,16, placed fifth in the women’s 200m butterfly with a time of 2:16.96. She also broke the club record in the 100m butterfly with a time of 1:02.67.

Joshua Kim,16, broke the club record in the men’s 50m breaststroke with a best time of 29.98.

Hugh McNeill,15, made the Canadian Pacific Trials in the 200m backstroke with a time of 2:08.21, he is also swimming as part of the Swim BC training camp team.

Adam Schmidt, 15, qualified for the Canada Junior Championships in the 1500m freestyle with a time of 17:15.60. Registration for the Langley Olympians Swim Club is ongoing.

The Langley Olympians will be offering July swimming and July summer camps at the Walnut Grove Community Centre.
