The Walnut Grove Gators nearly pulled off the upset, but in the end fell short against the province's top-ranked AAA senior boys' basketball team.

Playing in the championship final of the 23rd Legal Beagle senior boys' basketball tournament last week in Port Coquitlam, the Gators lost 65-55 to the Kelowna Owls.

Walnut Grove is ranked sixth in the province.

The Gators had three players named to the tournament all-star team: Paul Getz, Desean Monsanto and Jadon Cohee.

In the team's other tournament games, they defeated R.C. Palmer 74-58 and Tamanawis 80-67. Tamanawis is ranked third in the province, while Palmer is unranked, but the defending provincial champion.

In the semifinals, Walnut Grove needed overtime, but they edged the host ninth-ranked Terry Fox Ravens 60-58.
