Not only did Braedon Dolfo capture the gold medal at the Harry Jerome Classic on Sunday, but the Langley sprinter set a new Canadian Paralympic record in the process.
Dolfo, who is visually impaired, won the 200m event in 23.15 on Sunday at Burnaby’s Swangard Stadium.
The medal was one of two Dolfo won and one of three others Langley Mustangs Track and Field athletes captured.
Dolfo and Dustin Walsh — who was fifth in the 200m race won by Dolfo — helped Canada win silver in the 4x100 relay event.
Both visually impaired Mustangs athletes are hoping to run for Canada at this summer’s Paralympic Games in London.
Javelin throwers Kyle Thiessen and Tiffany Perkins, both won bronze in the men’s and women’s events, respectively.
Thiessen threw 74.20m while Perkins checked in at 52.02m.
Several other local athletes just missed on podium finishes.
Mustangs’ Robbie Gallaugher was fourth in the long jump at 7.34m; Mustangs’ James Turner was fifth in the javelin at 53.50m and seventh in the long jump at 6.45m; Trinity Western Spartans Fiona Benson was fourth in the 1500m event at 4:22.97 while Walnut Grove Gators’ Ashley Windsor was 13th at 4:31.45; and Coquitlam Cheetahs Jarid Vaughan was fourth in the 100m with a time of 10.62. Vaughan is a R.E. Mountain graduate who attended the University of Texas at Arlington on a track scholarship.
