After winning just once in three tries during preliminary play, the Langley C3 Reapers turned up their game for the playoff round, bringing home the gold medal.
The bantam C hockey team was competing at the Cowichan Valley Remembrance Day hockey tournament, coming out on top among the eight teams in contention.
“We got better as the tournament progressed,” said Reapers coach Kevin Taylor.
“We had a strong effort from all the players, especially in the final game when it mattered the most.
“Everyone chipped in and the players came together as a group over the weekend.”
In the final, Langley came out energized against a tired-looking Peninsula team, winning 5-1.
Steven Chambers gave the Reapers an early lead and they never looked back.
Mark Napier had an assist while Dominic Williams provided solid goaltending.
In the semifinals, Tyson Burgess had a goal and two assists while Braeden Macdonald scored once and Brennan Early had an assist.
In the round-robin, Langley won once and tied twice.
In the opener, Hayden Davies scored four goals in a 5-3 win over South Delta C5, with Nicholas Romero getting the other goal and Shane Taylor chipping in with an assist.
Game two was a 3-3 tie against Cowichan Valley. Curtis Goode had one goal and Eric Nordal had a solid game on defence.
And in the final round-robin game, Emmett Fast scored in the final minute to earn his team a 2-2 tie against Peninsula. Ethan Jancowski picked up an assist on the tying goal. Ciaran Wessel also had a strong game.
