Rivermen offence runs dry

Langley junior A hockey club has been blanked in two of past three games

Three goals in their past three games have resulted in just one victory for the Langley Rivermen.

The junior A hockey club has been shutout in two of their past three games, including 6-0 on Saturday night at the Langley Events Centre against the BCHL’s top team, the Penticton Vees.

The Rivermen had beaten the Surrey Eagles on the road on Nov. 26, 3-1.

The team was also blanked 4-0 by the Vernon Vipers on Nov. 22.

Against Penticton, Langley’s lack of discipline was their undoing.

Langley played a physical game but also took eleven penalties including the first four of the game and gave up three power play goals.

“It was a tough loss,” said Marcus Vela.

“We got into penalty trouble early. They’ve got a good power play and took it to us. From there it just continued; the penalties kept coming and it just wasn’t our day today.”

Against Surrey, the Rivermen fell behind 1-0 before scoring three times in a span of 4:20 to close the first period.

Zac Masson, Evan Anderson and Jacob Kearley had the Rivermen goals.

Darren Martin earned first star honours after the Langley goaltender stopped 37 of the 38 shots he faced.

The Rivermen are on the road for their next game as they visit the Mainland Division-leading Chilliwack Chiefs (17-8-0-1, 35 points). Langley is third with a record of 13-10-1-3, 30 points.
