Nigel Boyd helped lead Steveston-London Secondary’s senior boys hoops team to the B.C. Triple A championship game.
Starting next year, Boyd will be wearing a Trinity Western University uniform.
On May 10, TWU men’s basketball coach Aaron Muhic officially announced the commitment of the Richmond shooting guard.
The 6’3” graduate-to-be of Steveston-London Secondary comes to TWU after an impressive Grade 12 campaign.
His team’s run to the provincial title tilt was highlighted by Boyd’s 36-point effort in a semifinal victory over Rick Hansen.
Boyd capped his high school career by averaging 17 points and six rebounds per game in his final season.
For his efforts, Boyd was named the Richmond Senior Boys League MVP and was a second team all-star at the provincial tournament.
“Nigel has the ability to be a high-level athlete in the CIS,” Muhic said. “He is a proven high-level basketball player and he knows how to win. His leadership skills and athletic ability will be a great addition to the Spartans. Coach Mike Stoneburgh at Steveston-London has built a great program and I know that Nigel will be able to compete right away. He will be a great fit within our Complete Champions Approach as he has a strong work ethic and does well to balance his studies and athletics.”
For his part, Stoneburgh said it was a “privilege” to coach Boyd for the past three years at Steveston-London.
Boyd set the career scoring record last year at SLSS after finishing with 1,727 points.
“He is a great kid who is always working on improving every aspect of his game, which makes him a very tough player to play against,” Stoneburgh said.
Boyd plans to study linguistics at TWU.
“I chose to come to TWU because I want to be part of a Christian community, while getting a great education and playing basketball,” Boyd said. “I can’t wait to get things going in the fall.”
