A rookie and a veteran from the Trinity Western Spartans both earned monthly honours from the BC Intercollegiate Hockey League.

Evan Last was named the league’s rookie of the month for October after scoring points in five consecutive games. He finished with four goals and eight points and sits sixth in league scoring.

Silas Matthys was named October’s top goaltender. After allowing four goals in the season’s first game, the fourth-year netminder bounced back to stop 86 of the next 89 shots he faced.

The Spartans are back in action tonight (Friday) at 7 p.m. when they host Simon Fraser at the Langley Events Centre.

TWU is coming off a 6-0 home-ice victory on Saturday at the LEC..

Jamey Kreller and Andrew Wheeler led the way with a pair of goals apiece as all four lines hit the scoresheet and six players had multi-point games.

Lucas Mills stopped all 30 shots he faced for the shutout.

“I thought we played a full 60 minutes,” said Spartans coach Barret Kropf.

“They had an early morning and we knew we needed to take advantage of that and we got off to a good start. We saw all of our lines contribute and we fed off each other and gained some good momentum. On the backend, our senior guys played well and, in net, (Mills) looked very confident. Throughout the whole lineup, guys were playing poised. We’re pretty happy with that effort.”
