Spartans help Canada finish 11th

Trinity Western Spartans Lucas Van Berkel, Brad Kufske and Branden Schmidt helped Canada to an 11th place finish at the men's world junior volleyball championships in Niteroi, Brazil.

Canada began the tournament with three straight losses before rebounding with three straight victories.

With a chance to play for ninth, Canada lost in four sets to Germany.

Playing for 11th and 12th place, they defeated Japan 3-0 (25-23,25-20,25-19).

Kufske finished the tournament with 80 points in eight matches, including a 19-kill effort against Egypt.

Van Berkel collected a total of 77 points in the tournament, including an eight-block game against Serbia.

Schmidt saw action in six sets but did not register a point.
