The Trinity Western Spartans made history over the weekend, clinching top spot in the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League.
The Spartans — who had previously never finished higher than third — defeated the Victoria Vikes 10-4 on Friday night at the Ian Stewart Complex in Victoria.
The team did see their eight-game winning streak come to an end in the rematch the next day, losing 5-4.
The Spartans had trailed 4-1 in the first period.
“It was a little bit of a frustrating game,” said Spartans coach Barret Kropf.
“Victoria came out flying out of the gate tonight and we didn’t. We had to battle our way back and in the end we made of game of it, but it doesn’t help when you give a team four goals in the first period. But Victoria is rolling and the Vikes deserve to be where they are at. There is lots of work and little adjustments to be made before the playoffs and we’re just thankful we have three or four games here to fine tune before the post-season."
The split leaves Trinity Western with a record of 15-3-0-2, with all three regulation losses coming at the hands of the second-place Vikes.
The Spartans are in Burnaby this weekend against the SFU Clan.
