Trinity Western's Holly Strom set a new Spartan women's basketball single-season scoring record over the weekend. With two league games remaining, Strom has amassed 386 points on the season.

The Trinity Western Spartans women’s basketball team made it four wins in their past six games after knocking off the UBC Okanagan Heat twice at the Langley Events Centre.

The Spartans won 60-45 on Friday and 74-65 on Saturday, improving to 7-13 on the season.

Holly Strom led the team in scoring both games and with her combined 45 points, set a new team single-season scoring record with 386 points, bettering the mark of former Spartan Taylor Stuart (367 points).

“Holly and I had a conversation early in the season about where she could be at the end of the season and we said we wouldn’t talk about it again and that we would just let it happen,” said Spartans coach Cheryl Jean-Paul.

“She is letting it happen. We saw sparks from her all along last season. She is finding a way to find answers and she is refusing to believe that anyone can stop her right now. Her teammates have confidence in her and I have confidence in her.”

“There was just a maturity today that we just were not going to let them get ahead of us. We talked after about how we were able to bend, but not break,” Jean-Paul said.

“We had some critical defensive stops and with Holly in foul trouble it really challenged the rest of us to step up.”

Strom, who is averaging 19.3 points per game, paced TWU with 25 points, nine rebounds and four steals, while Janelle Traber added a season high 17 points to go with seven rebounds.

“Janelle has had a couple of good games now and she is finding the shots that she needs to be taking. For us to have someone who can hit the jump shot, with Holly who can attack the rim and Emily Knauff working inside and Stephanie pushing the ball up the floor it gives us a lot of offensive tools and makes us tough to beat,” added Jean-Paul.

“We are getting a lot from everybody and that makes it exciting.”

The Spartans, who led from start to finish, opened the game with an 18-15 lead after the first quarter and a 32-30 lead at the end of the half.

TWU came out strong to start the second half. The Spartans outscored the Heat 24-17 in the quarter to take a 56-47 lead going into the final frame.

The team, which did not qualify for the Canada West playoffs, closes the season with a home-and-home series against the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades, including Saturday at the LEC at 5 p.m.
