The top two teams in the country battled it out over the weekend with both teams holding serve on their home court.
The top-ranked Trinity Western Spartans women's volleyball team won 3-1 (20-25,25-17,25-19,25-17) on Saturday at the Langley Events Centre over the No. 2 UBC Thunderbirds.
The T-Birds had won in straight sets 3-0 (25-18,25-13,25-22) the night before at War Memorial Gymnasium.
Both teams maintained their current ranking.
"We needed to address some serve receive concerns we had from last night and we did that," said Spartans coach Ryan Hofer.
"UBC is a solid serving team and we had to make sure that we positioned ourselves in key places so we could pass the ball and give ourselves a fighting chance."
Kelci French led the team with 31 assists, five kills, 17 digs, three blocks and a pair of aces.
In Friday's match, Nicole Bazin had six kills and five blocks, while Amy Ott had five kills, 11 digs and three blocks.
Kelci French finished with 20 assists, three kills and seven digs and libero Kristen Moncks had nine digs.
"It's good to play a team like UBC first thing in the season because we now realize the level we're going to have to play at to be successful," Hofer said.
"We didn't play at that level consistently tonight. We competed hard at some points in the match, but not enough.
"I thought we started to figure it a bit in the third set, but by that point, it was too late."
The Spartans (1-1) are in Regina (1-1) for a pair of games this weekend.
