The Langley Stampeders locked up top spot in the midget division, winning a defensive battle over their crosstown rivals, the North Langley Kodiaks.
The Stamps scored late to win 7-6 on Saturday at McLeod Athletic Park.
The Kodiaks led 6-0 at the half thanks to a pair of Sam Wegert field goals and that stood as the game’s only points until the fourth quarter when the Stamps’ Azuka Okoli punched the ball in from four yards out for the go-ahead touchdown.
North Langley tried to answer but Nathan Murray came up with an interception for Langley at the Stamps’ 22-yard line to seal the victory.
That was one of several big plays by the Langley defence as one drive was snuffed out by a blocked field goal attempt and another ended on the Stamps’ two-yard line with a Josh Fletcher interception.
North Langley receiver Max Joseph had a great game with several highlight-reel catches from quarterback Nicholas Nica.
The Kodiaks defence was led by Isaiah Okoli, Max Joseph, Jonathan Chwaklinski, Daniel Evanow, Sam Wegert, Mason Block, Ryan Barthelson and Timothy and Thomas Janke, who kept the Stampeders out of the end zone until the fourth quarter.
