Stealth can't crack Rock

Toronto hands Vancouver third straight defeat

For the second straight game, the Vancouver Stealth offence was held in check as they could not crack double digits.

And the end result was a 9-6 loss to the Toronto Rock at Toronto's Air Canada Centre on Sunday afternoon.

The loss was the Stealth's third straight defeat and resulted in the National Lacrosse League team firing head coach Dan Perreault on Tuesday morning.

He has been replaced by Jamie Batley, who has 82 career NLL games on his coaching resume.

Vancouver is 3-7 with eight games to play, a half-game behind Calgary (4-7) for third place in the NLL West Division.

Against the Rock, goals were at a premium, especially in the first half.

Toronto's Brett Hickey and Rob Hellyer scored a power-play goal apiece in the first quarter to stake the Rock to a 2-0 lead after 15 minutes.

Rhys Duch and Corey Small got the visitors on equal footing with goals 38 seconds apart early in the second but the Rock took a 4-3 lead into the half after Hickey and Hellyer each scored again. Sandwiched in between was a Stealth goal from Logan Schuss.

Brock Sorenson and Colin Doyle made it 6-3 early in the third before Small got his second to cut the lead to two goals after three quarters. And after Hellyer made it 7-4 in the fourth, Garrett Billings scored a pair of power-play goals to get the Stealth within a goal. That would be as close as they would get, however, as Hickey completed his hat trick to give the Rock some breathing room. Brodie Merrill finished things off with an empty-net goal.

Nick Rose made 46 saves, including 15 in the first quarter alone for Toronto.

Tyler Richards finished with 37 saves on 45 shots.

The Rock power play went 4-for-7 while Vancouver was 3-for-5.

Toronto also won the loose ball battle 76-62 and had a slight edge in face-offs, 10-9.

Vancouver will look to return to the win column when they host Saskatchewan at the Langley Events Centre on Saturday, March 19 at 7 p.m.
