Students draw line on Olympic art

The role of sport and the positive impact it has on children’s lives will forever be on display at the Langley Events Centre, thanks to the Spirit of Sport legacy art project.

The work of art, which is four feet high and 40 feet long, features the art of more than 450 Langley elementary school children.

The artwork, created by Township of Langley graphic artist Brad Johnson, captures the children’s enthusiasm for sport and the positive role it plays in their lives. It also commemorates the Olympic torch’s visit to Langley.

“This was a lot of fun to put together,” said Johnson, who volunteered his time to the project.

“There is something so innocent about kids’ drawings that you can’t capture as an adult.”

A sports fan and father, Johnson often receives sports-related art from his own kids. He said the excitement from their drawings was echoed in the hundreds of pieces the local students submitted.

“Kids are competitive, but they also want to have fun, and in all the drawings the kids have happy faces,” Johnson said. “As a coach myself, my emphasis has always been to just have fun, and I can see that in these drawings.

“There is such energy in them.”

The artwork will be displayed on the north wall near the east end of the concourse. It will be officially unveiled during the second period of the Slovakia-Russia women’s hockey game on Feb.8.
