The Langley Thunder made a preemptive move in advance of the Western Lacrosse Association trade deadline.

The Thunder, currently sitting atop the senior A WLA standings and the defending league champions, acquired Sam Cook from the Maple Ridge Burrards.

In exchange for the Burrards captain, Langley surrendered veteran Steve Hay and rookie Patrick O'Meara.

Cook is known as a staunch defender and fearless competitor.

Hay was drafted by the Thunder in 2003 and O'Meara was taken in this past draft.

"He was the ultimate team guy," said Langley governor Rob Buchan.

"He went to war for us every night and had the heart of a lion. It was tough to let him go.

"(And) O'Meara is someone with great potential and really contributed in his time with us."

To fill the toughness void created by Hay's departure, Langley signed veteran Jamie Hackel to its active roster. Hackel last played for the Thunder two season ago.

The Thunder are back in action on June 30 when they host the Victoria Shamrocks at the Langley Events Centre.
