Thunderbirds, Chiefs trade wins

Major midget hockey league teams each win on home ice

Every team aims to score first and play the rest of the game with the lead.

But that strategy backfired over the weekend for the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds and Vancouver NE Chiefs.

Both major midget hockey league teams scored first but would go on to be on the wrong end of a 4-1 score.

The split leaves Fraser Valley with a 4-4-1-1 record through 10 games in the BC Major Midget Hockey League.

The first game, which was played on Saturday at the Abbotsford Recreation Centre, saw the T-Birds fall behind 1-0 early in the first period before Justin Plett tied the game midway through the second. Fraser Valley put the game away with three goals in the third period as Baxter Anderson, Plett and Brodi Stuart each found the back of the net.

Blake Bonnar got Fraser Valley on the board in the rematch on Sunday at the Poirier Sports and Leisure Centre in Coquitlam but the Chiefs tied the game late in the period and then struck for three goals in the final 20 minutes.

Fraser Valley plays a pair of home games this weekend at the ARC against the South Island Royals.
