Playing their third game in as many days, the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds could not complete the perfect road trip.

The major midget hockey team fell 5-3 to the Cariboo Cougars in BC Major Midget Hockey League action on Sunday morning.

The T-Birds had edged the Cougars 6-5 the day before, with both games played at Prince George’s Kinsman Centre.

The Cougars are the top team in the league with a record of 28-5-1-0 and 57 points while the Thunderbirds are currently sitting in fifth place at 20-11-3-1 and 44 points.

Fraser Valley began the road trip with a 3-1 win over the Thompson Blazers at the Sandman Centre in Kamloops.

Baxter Anderson and Blake Bonnar put the T-Birds ahead 2-0 with first-period goals and after the Blazers cut the lead in half heading into the third period, Jonathan Rees scored into the empty net.

Boston Bilous earned the win, allowing just the one goal against.

Playing the Cougars the next day, Fraser Valley found itself trailing 5-4 late in the third period before Justin Plett scored two goals 1:36 apart for the come-from-behind victory. He also had an assist for the three-point game.

Rees scored Fraser Valley’s first three goals and finished with four points while Brodi Stuart (one goal, two assists) had the other goal. Bonnar and Matthew Dyck each picked up a pair of helpers with Bilous again earning the win.

The Thunderbirds jumped ahead 2-0 in the first six minutes of Sunday’s game on goals from Dawson Penner and Stuart. The Cougars tied it up before intermission and after the home side went up 3-2, Plett tied things up prior to the third period. But Cariboo would score the only two goals of the final frame.
